YORK, PA.- The Goucher College Gophers dropped a non-conference volleyball contest to the York College Spartans on Wednesday, October 19th, 3-0. The set scores of the match were 25-16, 25-14, and 25-17. In all three sets the Gophers were able to compete successfully, only to be the victim of late set runs by York. The win was the 20th win of the season for the Spartans and the loss drops the Gophers record to 4-16
The first set was back-and-forth early as neither team could gain any significant momentum. The set was tied five times with the final tie coming at 9-9. York went on a 6-0 spurt to finally gain control of the set. The Gophers cut the lead to three at 17-14 but York went on an 8-2 run to close out the set one win.
York jumped out to an early set two lead only to have the Gophers come back to take a 7-6 lead. York regained control briefly and pushed out to a 13-9 lead. The Gophers trimmed the Spartan lead to two, twice, with the second time coming at 14-12. York would then go on a 9-2 run to close out the set two victory.
In set three, York jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Gophers fought back to tie the set at seven and again at nine. York led 16-13 when they ripped off a 6-0 run to take a 22-13 lead they would never relinquish.
The Gophers return to action on the road on Saturday, October 22 when they travel to Frostburg, Maryland to take on St. Mary’s College of Maryland (1:00 pm) and Frostburg State (3:00 pm).
