Gophers Falter Against Green Terror

BALTIMORE, MD.- The Gophers (5-7) hosted the Green Terror of McDaniel College (5-6) in a non-conference match-up for the first game of their tri-match. In this contest, the Green Terror maintained their lead, sweeping the Gophers in three sets.
Goucher began the scoring off a few errors from McDaniel; however, the Green Terror quickly took the lead. Kills from Maria Basantes and Alex Jordan then tied the score at 9-9. Shortly after, McDaniel went on a five-point scoring run before a spike from Lucille Hendricks gave Goucher control back. Two consecutive kills from Basantes later gave Goucher the lead at 16-14. Nevertheless, McDaniel picked up momentum with a six-point scoring run that secured them the lead. Although Juliana Stoneberg had one final kill, McDaniel ultimately took the set 25-17.
McDaniel takes an early 6-2 lead. Stoneberg and Basantes keep swinging, adding points to the Gopher tally. Gophers push back against the Terror lead with two service aces from Madi Kraemer, tying the score 11-11. Errors by both teams, McDaniel having control of the ball and gaining two consecutive service aces. Goucher fights the McDaniel lead with kills from Hendricks and Kelsi Hockaday, and Basantes takes the Terror lead to 20-18. AaShyah De Vries and Hockaday have successful swings that lead to McDaniel calling a timeout with 23-23 on the scoreboard. Two attacks by the Green Terror led to McDaniel taking the set 25-23.
Gophers take control early, 4-0. The Green Terror begins to swing, adding to their scoreboard. A few errors by McDaniel tie the score 8-8. Athena Savick assists the setter for a kill from Sofia Ortiz. McDaniel stays competitive, keeping the lead. Hendricks and Alex Dzhygit spike, gaining on the Terror 17-14. Hockaday's serve leads to a service ace. Nearing the end of the set, Basantes and Dzhygit fight to regain control with points fron their kills. McDaniel maintains their lead, taking the set 25-21.
Basantes was the leader in kills with eight of the team's 21. Ortiz was the leader in assists with eight, followed closely by Savick and Jordan. Hockaday was the team leader in solo blocks.
The Gophers will be traveling to Washington College (Md.) on Wednesday, October 1st. The game will begin at 7 pm.
