YORK, Pa. - Goucher's J. Fraley Coles (The Plains, VA/Highland School) placed first in a field of 64 runners today at the York Invitational, which was conducted at John Rudy Park.
Coles completed the 5,000-meter race in 20:02.05, which is the seventh-fastest time for that distance in the history of Goucher's women's cross country program and it provided her with a more than 12-second victory over runner-up Becca White from Albright. Jenna Hackett from Catholic, the reigning York Invitational champion, placed third this year and finished more than 26 seconds after Coles.
After Coles, the next Goucher runner to cross the finish line was Becky Foner (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) in 11th place with her time of 21:19.91.
Tamara Filipovic (Belgarde, Serbia/Mercersburg Academy) placed 18th (22:31.75) and Kate Young (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) 20th (22:35.47, giving Goucher four runners among the top 20 finishers.
As a team, Goucher wound up in third place, just missing second place by a scant three points. Catholic captured the team title with 45 points, followed by Albright in second with 71 points and Goucher in third with 74. After Goucher, team scoring went: York, fourth place (99 points), Villa Julie, fifth (112), Marymount, sixth (136), Lancaster Bible, seventh (172) and Anne Arundel Community, eighth (216).
