TOWSON, Md. - It was by only a point, but Goucher had to settle for being the runner-up in today's Goucher-York Relay Challenge.
The unique event was a 14,000-meter men's and women's relay race where a male runner led off by running a 4,000-meter leg followed by the female with which he was paired running the same distance. After that, the male runner went out for a second time, again for a distance of 4,000 meters, before his female partner ran the final 2,000 meters of the race.
The event was scored similar to a dual meet, with York winning, 27-28.
First place in the race went to York runners Kevin Snyder and Melody Parshall, who covered the course in a combined time of 51:19, which was :22 faster than Goucher's Sean Mack (Albany, NY/Albany) and J. Fraley Coles (The Plains, VA/Highland School).
Adam Scipione (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and Tamara Filipovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Mercersburg Academy) from Goucher placed third with a time of 53:31, and Zach Martin (Victor, NY/Victor Central) and Becky Foner (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) were fifth (54:42).
