The senior completed the 6,000-meter race in 23:42, the sixth-fastest time for a race of that distance in the history of Goucher's women's cross country program. She qualified for today's race by placing 14th in a field of 267 runners at the NCAA Division III Mid-East Regional last weekend.
Sarah Zerzan from Willamette was the first runner to cross the finish line. Her winning time of 20:54 provided her with a 23-second victory over the runner-up, Liz Montgomery from Geneseo St.
Amherst captured the team title - its first Division III national championship in the sport of women's cross country - with a score of 120 points. Second place went to Plattsburgh St. with 159 points.
Coles was the first female runner in school history to represent Goucher at nationals. During her outstanding career with the Gophers, she was recognized as an all-conference performer all four years and earned all-region honors in 2006 as a junior and again this year.
