MADISON, N.J. - J. Fraley Coles (The Plains, VA/Highland School), a senior runner on Goucher's women's cross country team, was selected as the 2007 Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete for her sport, according to an announcement issued today by the conference.
A committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletic directors and sports information directors chose six athletes as Senior Scholar-Athletes, picking one for each of the fall sports sponsored by the conference. The honorees had to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 and were selected based on their accomplishments in all areas of college life including athletics, academics and other extracurricular activities.
The 2007 Landmark fall sport Senior Scholar-Athletes, in addition to Coles, are: Josiah Ramsey, Susquehanna, men's cross country; Michelle Campbell, Juniata, field hockey; Chris Nitta, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, men's soccer; Mary Beth Vogel, Scranton, women's soccer, and Brooke Hinkley, Scranton, volleyball.
Coles is a psychology major who has achieved a 3.61 cumulative GPA while distinguishing herself as the top female cross country runner in school history. She represented Goucher and the Landmark Conference at this year's NCAA Division III Championship, placing 210th in a field of 280 runners.
In addition to earning all-conference honors as a runner all four years, Coles was recognized as an All-Mid-East Region performer as a junior in 2006 and again this season.
Among the top academic honors Coles has received since arriving at Goucher are her All-Academic Individual Awards from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in 2004 and 2005. To qualify for this prestigious award, a runner must carry a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA and finish in the top 25 percent at a regional cross country meet.
Coles serves as a student representative on Goucher's Board of Trustees and is president of CAUSE, the institution's community service club.
