YORK, Pa. – Goucher had a sufficient number of runners to earn a team score for the first time this season and placed fifth in a field of eight teams at the York Invitational.
The top two runners for Goucher were juniors Katie Shaw (Albuquerque, N.M./Bosque School) and Kate Young (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca). Shaw completed the 5,000-meter race in 21:47.69, good for 12th place, and Young followed in 13th place with a time of 22:10.05.
For Shaw, that was the fastest time she's ever turned in for a cross country race of that distance.
Goucher had a third runner in the top 20 in freshman Alex Collis (Glenside, Pa./Abington), who finished in 22:56.61 and 20th place. Then came Hannah Southworth (Madbury, N.H./Oyster River) in 42nd place (24:33.70) and Chiara Collette (Jakarta, Indonesia/Jakarta International School) in 47th place (25:08.75).
In finished in fifth place with 122 points, the Gophers wound up behind McDaniel (24 points), York (87), Albright (87) and Hood (106), but ahead of Stevenson (144), Lancaster Bible (163) and Anne Arundel Community (170).
