ALTOONA, Pa. – Katie Shaw (Albuquerque, N.M./Bosque School) was the first Goucher runner to cross the finish line today at the 2008 Landmark Conference Championships, which were conducted at Fort Roberdeau Historic Site.
Shaw completed the 6,000-meter race in 26:39.8, which is the 79th fastest time in school history for that distance. Her time put her in 31st place in a field of 77 runners, which is an improvement of 16 spots from where she finished as a sophomore at last year's conference meet.
Goucher's second runner was junior Kate Young (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) in 40th place with a time of 27:24.0. After Young came freshman Alex Collis (Glenside, Pa./Abington) in 58th place and a time of 29:18.6.
Susquehanna runners Alycia Woodruff and Casey Hess finished 1-2 in the race. Woodruff's winning time was 23:24.5 and she was named Landmark Conference Female Runner of the Year in a vote following the meet by the conference's head coaches. Hess finished :02.1 behind her teammate and was chosen Rookie Female Runner of the Year.
Susquehanna wrested the team title away from Juniata this year, the Crusaders placing first in the team scoring with 40 points. The Eagles were second with 61 points followed by Scranton in third (72 points), Catholic in fourth (79), Moravian in fifth (88), Drew in sixth (189) and Goucher tied for seventh place with U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (213).
