York Runners Emerge with 25-32 Victory Over Goucher
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher produced the top mixed entry, but York emerged with a seven-point victory in today's Goucher-York Relay Challenge.
The unique event was a 10,000-meter men's and women's relay race where a male runner led off by running a 4,000-meter leg followed by the female with which he was paired running half that distance. After that, the male runner went out for a second time, this time for a distance of 2,000 meters, before his female partner ran the final 2,000 meters of the race.
The event was scored similar to a dual meet, with York winning, 25-32.
First place in the race went to Goucher runners Adam Scipione (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and Hadley Couraud (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), who covered the course in a combined time of 36:28.30, which was :07.06 faster than York's top pairing of Ryan Janes and Tuesday Wilson.
The second-fastest duo from Goucher was made up of Zach Martin (Victor, N.Y./Victor Central) and Hannah Southworth (Durham, N.H./Oyster River), which finished in fifth place with its time of 38:11.44. In sixth place with a time of 38:22.25 were Patrick Squires (Port Republic, Md./Calvert) and Katie Shaw (Albuquerque, N.M./Bosque School) representing Goucher.
