Regionally Ranked Cardinals Finish Six Points Behind Gophers
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Once Goucher runners finished 1-2-3 in today's Catholic Invitational, there was nobody who could catch head coach John Caslin's Gophers in the team scoring.
The top performer in the 6,000-meter race was junior Kelsey Myette (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central). Her winning time of 23:56.1 is the second-fastest ever by a female on the course, located on the campus of the U.S. Armed Forces Retirement Home.
The next three runners crossed the finish line within 6.6 seconds of one another, but the order was crucial in determining the team champion. Sophomore Hadley Couraud (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and freshman Taylor Burr (Addison, Maine/Maranacook Community) grabbed second and third place, respectively, ahead of Catholic's Camelia Mayfield, who was fourth.
Couraud was clocked at 25:13.0, Burr at 25:15.0 and Mayfield at 25:19.6.
Three additional Catholic runners followed Mayfield in before freshman Shea Staab (Fallston, Md./Fallston) took eighth place for the Gophers with her time of 27:18.7. The final runner to count in Goucher's team score of 25 points was freshman Kathryn Walker (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) in 11th place (28:18.5).
Catholic, which was No. 8 in the South/Southeast Region in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's Division III regional rankings coming into the race, trailed Goucher by six points in the final team scoring.
