Runner-Up Gophers Finish Three Points Behind Crusaders
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's Kelsey Myette (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) broke the course record on the way to a first-place performance today at the Goucher Cross Country Classic.
In addition to being the 15th-fastest time for a 6,000-meter race in the history of Goucher's women's cross country program, the junior's winning time of 23:59.4 provided her with a more than 45-second margin of victory over the runner-up, Alycia Woodruff from Susquehanna, and lowered the course record by nearly 5-tenths of a second. The course record, established in 2008 by Darcy McDonald from Dickinson, was 23:59.86.
Woodruff, who was the Landmark Conference individual champion in 2007 and again in 2008, completed the race in 24:45.2.
Finishing third in the field of 105 runners was freshman Taylor Burr (Addison, Maine/Maranacook Community) from Goucher. She crossed the finish line in 24:55.6.
Goucher's third runner today was sophomore Hadley Couraud (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), who was clocked at 25:09.8, good for sixth place.
With freshmen Katelynn Zidanic (York, Pa./Central York) and Shea Staab (Fallston, Md./Fallston) placing 17th and 18th, respectively, Goucher's team score came out to 45 points. Susquehanna, however, had five runners in among the top 14 finishers and the Crusaders (42 points) edged out head coach John Caslin's Gophers for the team title by three points.
Zidanic posted a time of 26:17.9 and Staab a time of 26:30.2.
In addition to Goucher and Susquehanna, there were runners from three other Landmark Conference schools in the race: Juniata finished in fourth place with 89 points, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy was seventh (223 points) and Drew did not enough a sufficient number of runners to earn a team score.
The 2010 Landmark Conference Championships will be conducted on the Goucher campus on Oct. 30.
