BETHLEHEM, Pa. — For the second year in a row, Goucher produced the Female Rookie Runner of the Year in the Landmark Conference as head coaches throughout the conference voted that honor to freshman Katherine Currier (Brooklyn, N.Y./LaGuardia) today after she placed fifth at the 2011 Landmark Conference Women's Cross Country Championships.
Currier was the only Goucher runner to earn first-team All-Landmark Conference honors by finishing in seventh place or higher in the 6,000-meter race, but three of her teammates were accorded second-team accolades for being in the second group of seven finishers: sophomore Taylor Burr (Addison, Maine/Maranacook Community) was eighth, sophomore Katelynn Zidanic (York, Pa./Central York) was 10th and junior Hadley Couraud (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) was 12th.
Cadee Rockwell and Kristina Ruggiero, both from Moravian, finished 1-2 in the race, conducted on a course that was covered by as much as four inches of snow at some points. Rockwell's winning time was 24:12.0, giving her a 26.3-second victory over Ruggiero. Catholic's Camelia Mayfield (24:46.4) and Susquehanna's Sarah Dickerson (24:53.2) were the other two runners to finish ahead of Currier (25:01.3).
Burr turned in a time of 25:22.3, while Zidanic and Couraud were clocked at 25:37.9 and 25:41.0, respectively.
With four runners among the first 12 to cross the finish line, head coach John Caslin's squad made a serious bid for its first Landmark Conference title, falling just short of pulling it off. With a team score of 43 points, Moravian became the fourth different school to capture the crown in the five-year history of the event, and the Gophers were eight points back (51 points) in second place.
The order of finish in the team scoring after the Greyhounds and Gophers was Catholic in third with 82 points, Susquehanna in fourth (86 points), Scranton in fifth (120), Juniata in sixth (133) and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in seventh (199).
Kathryn Walker (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) was Goucher's fifth runner as she placed 16th with her time of 26:05.5. Kelsey Myette (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central), who was was voted Female Rookie Cross Country Runner of the Year in the Landmark Conference after she was runner-up in the 2010 conference meet, placed 28th in a field of 72 runners this year.
