Gophers Finish Behind Only Johns Hopkins, Towson
COCKEYSVILLE, Md. — Goucher's Katherine Currier (Brooklyn, N.Y./LaGuardia) was one of two runners who prevented Johns Hopkins from posting a perfect score at the Baltimore Metro Meet, which was conducted today at Oregon Ridge Park.
Starting with freshman Hannah Oneda in first place, the Blue Jays produced the top four performers in the 5,000-meter race. But before they could push a fifth runner across the finish line, Currier took fifth place and Elizabeth Tauber from Towson followed in sixth.
Oneda's winning time was 18:19.13.
Currier was clocked at 19:09.46, which is a new school record for a cross country race of that distance. The former record was 19:22.00, established by Bridget Wildt at the Baltimore Metro Meet in 1999.
Following Currier, the Gophers didn't have another runner come in until Katelynn Zidanic (York, Pa./Central York) in 41st place with a time of 21:58.36. Sarah Pardus (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and Zoe Malkin (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) finished back-to-back: Pardus in 49th place (22:25.26) and Malkin in 50th (22:35.83).
The fifth runner to figure in Goucher's team score of 101 points was Shea Staab (Fallston, Md./Fallston), who wound up in 53rd place with her time of 22:48.59.
The Blue Jays placed first in the team scoring with 17 points and Towson was second with 50. The Gophers took third place and were followed by Hood (109 points) in fourth, McDaniel (119) in fifth and Coppin St. (162) in sixth.
