Defending Champion Gophers Place Second
TOWSON, Md. — Johns Hopkins took spots two through eight, but Katherine Currier (Brooklyn, N.Y./LaGuardia) cruised to win the race she finished second in last year.
Currier held her lead throughout the race, opening up quickly and extending her lead right before entering the woods for the home stretch.
When she crossed the line, in front of that wave of Blue Jays, nobody was within 20 seconds of her pace.
The runner-up in last year's race, Currier shaved over 100 seconds off her time from the 2011 competition, in which the Gophers placed first. She becomes the first Goucher runner since Kelsey Myette, who ran today on the Goucher alumni/ae team, to win the event.
Katelynn Zidanic (York, Pa./Central York) trailed just Currier, nine members from the champion Blue Jays and one Coppin State runner, earning a 12th place finish.
Sarah Pardus (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and Zoe Malkin (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) finished just 11 seconds apart to finish 29th and 33rd for Goucher, earning valuable points for the team in its race for second.
Rounding out the scorers for Goucher was Christine Cherry (Laurel, Md./Meade) and seniors Hadley Couraud (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and Haley Augustson (Athens, W.Va./PikeView).
Johns Hopkins earned the trophy for posting the top score, placing 19 of the top 28 runners including putting all seven scorers in the top eight.
