TOWSON, Md. – Four Goucher runners recorded top 10 finishes at the Baltimore Metro Meet this morning, leading the Gophers to a first place finish among the four competing Division III programs.
Katherine Currier (19:52.94) and June Chiango (20:38.13) led the field at the 5K event, while Kathryn Walker (22:32.64 – ninth) and Katelynn Zidanic (22:39.60 – 10th) also cracked the top 10. Camille Jorgensen (23:08.40 – 12th) rounded out the scoring for the Gophers, who won their first meet since the 2011 Goucher Classic.
"We're not even at full force yet," head coach John Caslin said. "We still have a couple of women that didn't compete today. We relied on our older leadership in Kat Currier, Kathryn and Katelynn. June couldn't have opened up the season any better, and Camille was huge for us today running in the fifth spot."
Goucher finished the meet at 34 points, well ahead of second-place McDaniel's 57. Hood and Stevenson rounded out the leaderboard at the Division III level.
Christine Cherry (23:47.13 – 14th), Maxine Eisenberg (25:25.06 – 21st) and Shea Staab (25:58.96 – 26th) also competed for the Gophers.
Towson, which hosted the event even though it was held on Goucher's campus, defeated Morgan State among the two competing Division I programs. Towson's Elizabeth Taylor ran the course in 19:15.93 to lead all runners. Currier placed third out of the 52 total runners competing between D-I and D-III, while Chiango was fifth overall.
Goucher returns to action at the Catholic Invitational in Washington, D.C., next Saturday. The 6K event will begin at 10 a.m.
"We're still a work in progress," Caslin said. "It's August 31. November is when we race, and for us to be conference champions we still have a lot of work to do. But we're one step closer to that after today."
