BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Katherine Currier (Brooklyn, N.Y./LaGuardia) became just the second runner in the history of Goucher's women's cross country program to earn all-region honors when she set a new school record for a 6,000-meter race today at the 2013 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championship.
The top 35 finishers in the race are awarded all-region recognition and Currier placed 28th in a field of 358 runners. The last Goucher female to earn all-region honors was Fraley Coles when she placed 14th overall at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship.
Ironically, that was where Coles established the record (22:32) that Currier broke by completing today's race in 22:13.
Currier will find out Sunday at 3 p.m. if she qualified to compete at the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championship later this month with her performance today.
Kelsey Patrick from Lebanon Valley was the first runner to cross the finish line today, doing it in a time of 21:00 for an 11-second victory over Hannah Oneda from Johns Hopkins.
Goucher's No. 2 runner today was senior Katelynn Zidanic (York, Pa./Central York), who placed 111th overall. She was clocked at 23:46.
Freshman Camille Jorgensen (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry) and junior Zoe Malkin (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) finished with identical times of 25:47, but Jorgensen was awarded 220th place and Malkin 221st. The No. 5 runner for the Gophers was senior Shea Staab (Fallston, Md./Fallston) with a time of 25:53, good for 226th place.
Each of Goucher's top five finishers set new personal best times at the meet. Senior Christine Cherry (Laurel, Md./Meade), who clocked in at 26:26, also tied a personal best for the Gophers.
As a team, Goucher finished with a score of 780 points, which put the Gophers in 28th place out of the 52 complete teams.
