Gophers Strong Offense Overpowers Vixens
BALTIMORE, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (2-4 overall) held the Vixens of Sweet Briar College (1-4 overall) scoreless on Friday night.
The first shot of the game came early from CharlotteBloom, who used this to set the tone for the Gophers. Following shortly after Ava Barnes added to her shot total for the season, contributing to the offense for the Gophers. At the 9:26 mark, Laureen Otieno launched a shot at the back of the net and scored her first ever collegiate goal.
Otieno's offense did not let up in the second quarter. Madison Zubo and Barnes teamed up and found Otieno where she scored her second goal of the game three minutes in, giving the Gophers the 2-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Barnes and Zubo fired back-to-back shots within three seconds of each other. At the end of the half, Goucher took 10 shots, while the Vixens did not earn a single shot in the first half.
Barnes got the offense going to start the second half by taking the first two shots. Camden West found Charlotte Bloom at the top of the shooting circle where she fired a powerful shot in the back of the goal (36:33). With three minutes left to go in the quarter, the Vixens took consecutive shots on Goucher Goalie Katie Bloom. With those two saves, junior, K. Bloom surpassed the 300 career saves mark. Despite the Vixens consecutive shots on goal, the Gophers kept the Vixens offense stagnant with Zubo scoring the fourth and final goal for the Gophers with an assistst from Wrenn Harney and Otieno. To end the quarter, Mimi Taff checked in for the Gophers.
Goucher kept the foot on the gas in the fourth quarter. Taking four shots in the first five minutes. The Gophers closed out the quarter by subbing in their final goalie, first year, Dayana Flores. The Gophers took ten shots on goal compared to the Vixens two.
Goucher took 20 shots, compared to Sweet Briar's. two. Zubo and Barnes leading the pack with four shots each. They were closely followed up by Otieno with three shots. The Vixens earned three penalty corners, while the Gophers earned ten. All three goalies for the Gophers saw the the field today. K. Bloom was in goal for 43:26 with two saves, while Taff played for 12:59 and Flores checked in for 3:35.
The Gophers are on the road taking on Hood College on Wednesday, September 24. The Gophers are back on Beldon Field on Saturday, September 27 at 1pm where they will be hosting a Morgan's Message game, against Landmark Conference opponent Drew.
