Gophers Drop Conference Opener to Rangers in Nail Biter
BALTIMORE, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (3-5) fall in their conference opener to Drew University (8-1) on Saturday afternoon.
First Year, Laureen Otieno opened up the offensive action for the game at the five minute mark by taking the first shot. That shot was followed up by another shot by first year, Madison Zubo. Drew took their first shot of the game nine minutes in. Here, Katie Bloom recorded her first save of the game. The quarter was rounded out with a second shot from Zubo.
The second quarter started slow, but the pace picked up quickly with a shot coming from Otieno four minutes in. Drew followed this up with two shots within one minute of each other. Angelena Holmes took her first shot of the game with ten minutes left in the half. For the rest of the quarter, the Rangers and Gophers traded shots back and fourth. To end the half, the Gophers took eight compared to the Rangers four. Both goalies matched with three saves a piece.
Goucher started the second half with strong offense. The Gophers started the second half taking four shots in the first four minutes. Five minutes into the third quarter, then Vivian Onunga and Zubo took back-to-back shots for the Gophers. More back-to-back shots followed for the Gophers. 37 minutes in, Goucher took three shots back-to-back. Within the next two minutes, Onunga took a penalty shot and scored the first goal of the game. Drew took the final shot of the quarter.
The Gophers had a energetic start to the quarter by taking five shots in the first seven minutes. The Rangers fired back with a shot to tie the score at 1-1. The Gophers and Rangers traded more shots back and fourth. Then, the Rangers found the back of the net again with just over a minutes to go. At the end of the second quarter, Goucher took 15 shots compared to Drew's seven. Drew had five saves versus K. Bloom's zero.
Goucher ended the game with 23 shots. Zubo ended the game with six shots. She was closely followed up by Onunga with five. Drew took 11 shots. K. Bloom ended the game recording three saves. Drew took 12 penalty corners versus Goucher's eight.
The Gophers return to action on at Immaculata University on Tuesday, September 30th at 7pm. The Gophers return to BEldon Field on Wednesday, October 8th at 7pm.
