Gophers Dominate Mighty Macs in 5-0 Victory
IMMACULATA, PA- The Goucher College Gophers (4-5 overall; 0-1 conference) earned a 5-0 road victory over Immaculata University (4-7 overall; 0-0 conference) on Tuesday night, holding the Mighty Macs scoreless while putting together one of their most balanced offensive performances of the season.
Immaculata opened the match with early pressure, taking the first three shots of the game. Goucher responded quickly with Madison Zubo and Laureen Otieno each testing the Mighty Macs' defense before junior, Angelena Holmes set up Madison Usher for their first goal at the 10:44 mark. The Gophers took one more shot before the end of the first quarter.
The momentum carried into the second quarter as a first-year Ava Barnes scored to double the lead. Just minutes later, Ateka Owino tallied her first collegiate goal to make it 3-0. Immaculata countered with a pair of attempts, but the Gophers' defense held strong with Vivian Onunga adding the final shot before halftime. At the break, Goucher held a narrow edge in shots (9-8), while goalkeeper Katie Bloom collected two saves.
In the third quarter, Goucher's offense surged. Otieno sparked the attack, and seconds later, Barnes netted her second goal of the night off an Otieno assist. Less than two minutes later, Usher fired another shot, keeping the Macs under constant pressure. The Mighty Macs attempted to fight back with back-to-back shots coming less than a minute after Usher's. The Gophers offense was too strong for Immaculata. At 37:19, Otieno capped off an offensive run with her first goal, extending the lead to 5-0. The Gophers outshot Immaculata 10-4 in the quarter, controlling possession throughout.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mimi Taff entered for the fourth quarter in goal, stopping the only shot she faced. Goucher managed 12 second half shots, while the Macs recorded seven.
For the game, Goucher outshot Immaculata 21-15. Owino and Otieno led the attack with five shots apiece, while Barnes paced the scoring with two goals. K. Bloom recorded 45 minutes in goal with three saves. Taff played 15 minutes in goal with one save. The Gophers totaled four saves compared to nine for Immaculata, while the Mighty Macs' held the slight edge in penalty corners (7-5).
Field Hockey continues their road trip on Saturday, October 4th, visiting Scranton at 1pm for their second Landmark Conference opponent of the season. The Gophers return to Beldon Field on Wednesday, October 8th, to host Catholic at 7pm.
