Eagles Overpowered Gophers in ECAC Championship Game
BALTIMORE, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (9-10 overall, 4-5 conference) hosted the DIII ECAC Field Hockey Championship game against Husson University (9-7 overall, 4-1 conference) on Saturday afternoon. Goucher lost to Husson, 4-1.
The Gophers established an early offensive rhythm by taking the first six shots of the game. The Eagles converted a penalty corner to a goal at the 12:05 mark. 20 seconds later, the Eagles were able to get one past Katie Bloom to score their second goal of the game. Husson took an early 2-0 lead to end the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, the Eagles took three shots within a 11 second time span. Goucher came back on the attack with back-to-back shots coming from Vivian Onunga and Ateka Owino. With six minutes to go in the half, Husson went back on the attack with two more shots. At the 26:35 mark, Husson took a shot that was inches from being a goal due to the shot hitting the post. Husson ended the half with a shot in the last minute. To end the first half, the Eagles edged out the Gophers in shots, 10-9. Both K. Bloom and Husson tallied four saves.
The Eagles come out of the half with a powerful offensive push. The Eagles found the back of the net to start the second half. Husson kept the offensive pressure on the Gophers with two shots to follow. K. Bloom saved both shots on goal. Five minutes into the second half, Husson attempted three more shots. The Gophers fired back with a goal from Angelena Holmes with an assist from Onunga (36:34). For the next five minutes, the Eagles offense kept the Gopher defense on their heels. The Eagles capped off their strong offensive run with a goal to end the quarter.
Strong defensive plays kept the fourth quarter scoreless. Husson took two shots in the fourth quarter. At the end of the second half, the Eagles took 14 shots compared to the Gophers 1. K. Bloom recorded zero saves versus Husson's five.
Husson outshot Goucher, 24-10. K. Bloom racked up 60 minutes and nine saves and Husson tallied four. The Eagles has 12 penalty corner attempts versus Goucher's four.
The Gophers will back in action in the Fall of 2026 for their next season.
