WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Despite a career-high 20 points from Cam Isaacs (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown), Goucher College fell to host Oglethorpe in the first round of the West Palm Beach Tournament in non-conference men's basketball action on Friday. With the loss, the Gophers will face Geneva in the consolation game on Saturday after the Golden Tornadoes fell to Merchant Marine 70-68 in the other first round match on Friday.
Isaacs notched his fifth double-figure performance of the season and first career 20-point game after shooting 8-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-7 from behind the arc to finish with 20 points. After registering 10+ points in four of his six games of the season, Isaacs notched his first double-digit game for the first time in four games. It was also his 15th double-digit point contest of his career. The sophomore also matched his career best with four steals.
Isaacs, who now ranks second on the team with 10.6 points per game, becomes the second player on the roster with a 20-point game, joining senior Dwayne Morton (Baltimore, Md./Waynesville [Mo.]). The senior has seven career 20-point games including a career-high 31 points in his junior campaign. Isaacs is the first to turn the trick in 2019-20.
Morton added 12 points against the Stormy Petrels for his third-straight game in double figures if you count the exhibition game against William & Mary on December 15. The senior has five 10+ point games in his senior campaign and 40 career point games in double figures. In addition, Morton has posted 25 double-figure contests in his last 34 tilts. The senior sits third on the squad with 10.3 points per game.
Powered by 11 points by Isaacs, Goucher used a 16-8 run to take its first lead of the game at 16-15. Isaacs would reclaim the lead at 20-19 on a jumper with 9:55 left in the first half, Timmy O'Farrell (Davidsonville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) gave the Gophers a 22-21 edge on a jumper at 8:58 and Isaacs handed the Baltimore team the lead one last time on a jumper with 6:42 remaining for a 24-23 margin. During the first 14 minutes of the game Isaacs had 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the field.
Pat Goralski (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) tallied nine points and eight rebounds while O'Farrell registered a season-high seven points and six boards. Goralski leads the team with 10.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
The Stormy Petrels closed the first half on a 23-8 run to go into the locker room with a 46-31 lead. Oglethorpe then outscored the Gophers 45-32 in the second half to earn the 91-63 win to advance to the West Palm Beach Tournament championship game on Saturday.
Goucher will face Geneva in the consolation game on Saturday for the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Tipoff is 1 p.m. The Golden Tornadoes rallied from a 17-point deficit to tie the game, but lost when the decisive basket was scored with 14 seconds left.
