Kong Records Double-Double Against Gallaudet
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Goucher College Gophers (2-6 overall, 1-3 conference) fell in a close battle to the Bison of Gallaudet University (1-8 overall, 0-2 conference) on Tuesday night, dropping the contest 66-62.
The Gophers set the tone early with back-to-back threes from Jadyss Fifer that sparked the offense. Over the next five minutes, the Bison responded with a 9-0 scoring run. Goucher tied the game at nine apiece with a 3-pointer from Darnell Morris Jr., assisted by Brian Griffin. Over the next eight minutes, the teams traded baskets and exchanged the lead multiple times. At 7:19 on the clock, Gallaudet knocked down a three to tie the game at 22. Continuous offensive pressure led to a steady exchange of points, but the Bison held a slight edge at halftime, leading 38-34.
Gallaudet carried its first-half momentum, going on a 9-1 run to start the second half. The Gophers countered with a dominant 16-0 surge, sparked by a Morris Jr. 3-pointer off an assist from Liech Kong. A pair of free throws from Avree Harris capped the run, giving Goucher a brief lead. The teams exchanged points, and with three minutes left, Gallaudet tied the game at 60. The Bison pulled ahead with a jumper at the 1:35 mark. Goucher made several late attempts to close the gap, but could not overcome the Bison after they earned the lead.
Kong led the Gophers with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, along with two assists. Morris Jr. marked double-digits as well, earning 12 points and four assists. Griffin showed his defensive pressure with three steals and two defensive rebounds.
The Bison led the Gophers in field goal percentage by shooting 44.1% from the field compared to Goucher's 38.6%. From beyond the arc, Goucher shot 6-23 versus Gallaudet's 4-15. At the charity stripe, the Gophers shot an even 80.0% whereas Gallaudet went 52.6%.
Gallaudet outrebounded the Gophers 37-35; however, Goucher earned more second-chance points (11-6). The game consisted of nine lead changes and was tied eight times.
The Gophers are back in action on Friday, Dec. 12th, as they take on St. Mary's of Maryland at 7pm at The Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
