Gophers Close Out 2025 With Win Against Haverford
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (4-7 overall, 1-3 conference) rang in the new year with a 62-60 win against the Fords of Haverford College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Gophers started the game off strong with three steals, which led to a Jadyss Fifer layup. The Fords retaliated instantly with a made three. Goucher went on a 14-4 (13:19) scoring run highlighted by consecutive baskets from Darnell Morris Jr.. Haverford picked up their offensive momentum, outscoring the Gophers 19-3 (5:42). Both teams continued to exchange baskets to close out the half with Haverford leading Goucher 30-26.
Liech Kong scored the first bucket of the second half 13 seconds in. A Fifer basket tied the score at 32 apiece at the 17:04 mark. Sophomore Jack Murdaugh came off the bench to hit three shots in a row from beyond the arc to give the Gophers a six-point advantage with just under 15 minutes left in the game. Goucher and Haverford continued to trade baskets until a free throw from Haverford tied the game at 56 (4:15). A three from Morris Jr. and a jump shot from Brian Griffin pushed the Gophers ahead to give them a five-point lead with less than two minutes remaining in the game. The Fords fired back with back-to-back layups, but the Gophers were able to seal the victory at the free-throw line with points from Austin Carter.
Morris Jr led the team with 16 points in the contest. He shot 7-9 from the field and went 2-2 from the 3-point line and led the team with 9 rebounds. He was closely followed by Fifer, who scored 14 points, shooting 6-11 from the field. Fifer grabbed seven rebounds and led the team with three assists. Murdaugh came off the bench shooting 100% from three, adding nine points to the team's total for the night. Jon Perry snagged six rebounds, five of which were offensive.
Goucher led Haverford in field goal and three-point percentage, shooting 40.4% from the field and 36.8% from three. Haverford shot 27.3% from the field and 23.1% from three. The Fords held the advantage at the free-throw line, going 18-29 compared to the Gophers' 9-19. The game had eight lead changes and two ties.
Goucher returns to action in the new year when they take on Landmark opponent Drew on Wednesday, January 7th at 5pm on the road. On Sunday, January 11th, the Gophers travel to Philadelphia to play at The Palestra in a 5pm match-up against Juniata.
