Rangers Pull Away in Second Half to Defeat Gophers
MADISON, N.J. - The Goucher College Gophers (4-8 overall, 1-4 conference) fell to the Rangers of Drew University (10-2 overall, 4-1 conference), 97-70, on Wednesday evening.
Drew opened the contest with the first five points, but the Gophers answered with a layup from Brian Griffin. Both teams traded baskets for the next couple of minutes, with Liech Kong tying the game at 11. Over the next six minutes, the teams exchanged the lead. A layup from Darnell Morris Jr. evened the score at 20 with 10:16 remaining in the half. The Rangers maintained a narrow edge despite consistent scoring from both sides. Free throws from Kong pulled the Gophers within one point with six minutes on the clock. Drew closed the half with a 17-9 run to give them the 50-40 advantage going into halftime.
The Rangers extended their lead early in the second, scoring the opening basket. A Morris Jr. layup brought the Gophers within 10, but the Rangers instantly countered with a made shot from beyond the arc. Less than a minute later, free throws from Jon Perry began to chip away at the deficit. Drew went on a 25-16 run to lead the Gophers 80-59 with just under seven minutes left in the game. Goucher continued to battle, highlighted by a made three from Jack Murdaugh, off an assist by Avree Harris, but the Rangers pulled away to secure the 97-70 victory.
Morris Jr. lead the Gophers with 18 points, shooting 7-15 from the field and 100% from the free throw line. Kong and Griffin also reached double figures while Perry led Goucher with six rebounds in the contest. Griffin added four assists in the competition.
Drew held the advantage across the board, going 34-60 from the field, shooting 39.3% from three, and finishing 18-25 from the charity stripe. Goucher shot 26-67 from the field, 21.4% from beyond the arc, and went 15-23 from the free throw line. The Rangers outrebounded the Gophers 38-33. The game featured six ties and 12 lead changes.
The Gophers are back in action on Sunday, January 11th, when they take on Juniata at the Palestra in Philadelphia, tipping off at 5pm. The Gophers return home to face Moravian on Wednesday, January 14th at 5pm.
