Gophers Take on Eagles at Historic Palestra
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Goucher College Gophers (4-9 overall, 1-5 conference) fell to the Eagles of Juniata College (3-8 overall, 1-5 conference) on Sunday evening at the Palestra. The Gophers dropped the contest, 66-79.
Juniata showed their range from three early with a made three 40 seconds into game play, but the Gophers countered with a jump shot from Darnell Morris Jr. For the next six minutes, the teams exchanged baskets with the Eagles taking a 10-8 lead (13:38). Juniata started to pull away by going on a 10-point run that was started by a made three (10:10). The Juniata run was halted by an Avree Harris bucket. The Eagles continued to tack on points, leading them to a 21-8 run to end the half, giving Juniata a 44-18 lead going into halftime.
Jon Perry got the Gophers rolling in the second half with a strong attack to the rim. Goucher continued their offensive presence by going on a 12-5 (14:23) run, capped by a made shot from sophomore, Jack Murdaugh. The Eagles and Gophers exchanged baskets for the next six minutes. Goucher was able to capitalize on back-to-back Juniata turnovers, scoring four points in 11 seconds. The Gophers went on a 21-10 run to close out the game, highlighted by a Lucas Land 3-pointer. Despite an evenly matched second half, the Gophers could not overcome the first half deficit, falling 79-66.
Liech Kong led the Gophers with 15 points, followed closely by Morris Jr. 14 points, going 4-10 from the floor and 4-5 from the charity stripe. Three Gophers added five rebounds, while Brian Griffin and Harris lead the Gophers with three assists apiece.
Juniata held the advantage from the field and from beyond the arc. The Eagles went 23-52 from the field and 27.8 and shot 27.8% from three. The Gophers went 23-56 from the field and 26.1% from beyond the arc. The Gophers went 14-22 from the charity stripe compared to the Eagles 28-46.
The Gophers return to action on Wednesday, January 14th at 5pm at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
