Kong Leads Gophers Posting Double-Double
BALTIMORE, MD - Despite a strong second half, the Goucher College Gophers (4-10 overall, 1-6 conference) were defeated by the Greyhounds of Moravian University (10-4 overall, 4-3 conference), falling 77-72.
The Gophers scored the first points of the game with a Liech Kong layup, but Moravian countered with a made layup less than a minute later. Avree Harris slammed a dunk down to give the Gophers a two-point lead (16:59). The Greyhounds went on a 15-4 run to give them the advantage with ten minutes left in the first half. Moravian's run was halted by a made shot from beyond the arc from Kong. Both teams exchanged baskets, but another dunk from Harris brought the Gophers within five (6:53). To close the half, Moravian brought the Gophers on a 15-8 run to give them a 36-24 lead going into halftime.
The Greyhounds made the first bucket of the second half, but Darnell Morris Jr. responded with a made layup. The Gophers strung together back-to-back buckets with a made three from Brian Griffin. After exchanging baskets, the Greyhounds went on a 12-9 run that was ended by a Julian Sabbat 3-pointer. Moravian went on a 10-8 run over the Gophers that was ended by a Greyhound 3-pointer (8:55). Both teams exchanged baskets, and a bucket from Kong brought the Gophers within seven points with just under three minutes left in the game. As both teams continued to score, Griffin made a crucial 3-pointer to bring the Gophers within six points with just over 30 seconds left. The Gophers made strong offensive efforts but could not overcome the Greyhounds' late free throws, dropping the contest 77-72.
Kong led the Gophers with 17 points, while also adding 13 rebounds and three steals. Harris followed closely behind with 16 points, shooting 8-15 from the field and grabbing six rebounds. Griffin ended his night with 14 points, going 50% from three and leading the team with five assists.
The Greyhounds held the advantage from the field and the charity stripe. The Greyhounds went 46.6% from the field and 78.3% from the charity stripe. The Gophers shot 44.1% from the field and 50% from the free-throw line. The Gophers outshot the Greyhounds from three. Goucher went 7-17 from beyond the arc, and Moravian went 5-28.
The Gophers return to action on Saturday, January 17th, when they host Wilkes University in a 2pm matchup.
