Gophers Fall in Tight Battle Against Warriors
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (4-15 overall, 1-11 conference) fell in a close game to the Warriors of Lycoming College (6-14 overall, 2-11 conference). Despite a hard-fought game, the Gophers dropped the contest 69-61.
The Warriors opened up the game by scoring six straight points to give them an early advantage. The Gophers got on the board with a made three from Liech Kong. The Warriors proceeded to go on a 16-6 scoring run, capped by a dunk (12:55). A made basket from Chima Egeonu broke the two-minute scoring drought. Egeonu's layup sparked a 9-0 scoring run for the Gophers to put Goucher in the lead with 4:52 left in the half. A bucket from Lycoming tied it up at 24 with just over four minutes remaining in the half. Goucher went on a 7-0 scoring run to give them a four-point lead heading into the second half.
Goucher started the half off with a dunk from Egeonu to put them up by six points. Over the next eight minutes, the teams exchanged buckets, and the Warriors climbed their way back to take the lead, but a three from Darnell Morris Jr. brought the Gophers within eight. The teams continued to trade baskets as the Gophers slowly closed the gap. A three from Brian Griffin tied the game up at 56 apiece (5:21). The Gophers made strong offensive efforts, but could not overcome free throws from Lycoming, dropping the contest 69-61.
Kong led the Gophers with 21 points, going 7-10 from the field, shooting 3-5 from deep, and 100% from the free-throw line. Egeonu led the team in rebounds with nine on the night, while Avree Harris led the team with three assists.
Lycoming led the Gophers in field goal and three-point percentage. The Warriors went 42.9% from the field and 31.8% from three. The Gophers shot 41.4% from the floor and 26.5% from deep. The Gophers went 4-4 from the free-throw line to lead the Warriors, who went 8-13. The contest consisted of eight ties and four lead changes.
The Gophers return to action on Saturday, February 7th, when they face off against Drew University in a 2pm tip-off. They will also be hosting their Alumni game prior to tipoff.
