Kong Finishes 21 in Conference Win Against Eagles
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (5-17 overall, 2-13 conference) hosted the Eagles of Juniata College (8-15 overall, 5-11 conference) on Saturday afternoon. The Gophers held the lead at half, and, despite a late surge from the Eagles, won 66-59.
Liech Kong started the game strong for the Gophers, knocking down a three just over a minute into the game. After free throws and a basket, the Eagles took a 4-3 lead (17:37). The teams continued to trade baskets for the next several minutes when a three from Austin Carter brought the Gophers within one (7:50). Just over a minute later, an Avree Harris bucket put the Gophers ahead 15-14. Kong knocked down a shot from deep to keep the Gophers ahead by one with just under five minutes remaining in that half. The Gophers closed out the half by scoring seven straight points to lead at halftime, 27-21.
To start the second half, the Eagles came out finishing back-to-back buckets. The Gophers stormed down the court seconds later, with Kong making another shot from deep. Less than a minute later, Carter hit a three to give the Gophers a 33-25 lead just under five minutes into the second half. As the teams continued to trade baskets, Juniata sank a three to bring them within six points (12:32). Over the next six minutes, the Gophers went on a 13-10 run that was capped by back-to-back threes from Harris and Darnell Morris Jr. The Eagles made a late offensive push, but buckets from Kong and free throws from the Gophers held off the Eagles to win the contest 66-59.
Kong led the Gophers with 21 points and 14 rebounds, earning a double-double in the contest. Jadyss Fifer followed with ten points, while Morris Jr. rounded out the Gophers with five assists.
Goucher held the advantage statistically, going 20-49 from the floor, 34.6% from beyond the arc, and 17-27 from the free-throw line. Juniata shot 23-58 from the field, shot 22.2% from deep, and went 9-15 from the charity stripe.
The Gophers are in action for the final time this season at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center on Wednesday, Feb 18th at 7pm.
