BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (1-0-1) hosted the Notre Dame of Maryland University Gators (0-1-0) in their home opener on Beldon Field. This marked the season opener for the Gators.
The Gophers offense came out strong, drawing multiple fouls and getting a couple of shots off in the first few minutes. The momentum swung in favor of the Gators towards the end of the half, where they managed seven shots in the final ten minutes of the half. Despite the strong offensive effort on both ends, the game went into half tied at 0-0.
The lone goal of the game came just seconds into the second half. A long ball played by Jonathan Admia dropped in for Joel Lukoo for his second goal of the season, and his first on Beldon. This goal did not satisfy the offense for Goucher. With added pressure, they added three more shots in five minutes. Goucher remained in control for the remainder of the half, holding the Gators to just four shots.
Mzwandile Honde led the Gophers with five shots, while Lukoo led with the number of shots on goal (four). Ale Sternini recorded six saves in the contest, earning his 16th career shutout, tying him for first all-time in Goucher history. The Gophers outshot the Gators 15-12, and had more corner kick opportunities, leading 6-4 with all six coming in the second half.
The Gophers travel to face Stevenson on Wednesday, September 3rd at 7pm. They return home for a Saturday evening competition on September 6th for a 6pm kick off.
