WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Goucher men's soccer team (6-5-3 overall; 2-3 conference) earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Warriors of Lycoming College (3-6-4 overall; 0-3-2 conference) on Tuesday night, securing the program's first-ever win against the Warriors.
Lycoming came out strong, testing goalkeeper Ale Sternini within the opening minutes. However, the Gophers quickly responded, generating four shots in a five-minute stretch from three different players. The remainder of the half featured balance play, with both sides trading offensive opportunities and entering halftime scoreless.
The Warriors opened the second half with early pressure, recording four of the first five shots, while Andres Aristimuno having the fifth. Goucher capitalized soon after a corner kick, as senior Jonathan Adima found the back of the net off an assist from first-year Bryan Machado, this marked the lone goal of the match. Despite Lycoming's continued attack, the Gophers defense held strong to preserve the shutout.
The teams finished equal in shots (14-14), while Lycoming held the edge in corners 8-4. Sternini earned five saves in goal, while Aristimuno, Machado, and Paul Van Engeland each recorded three shots to lead Goucher's offense.
The Gophers travel to face Wilkes on Saturday, October 18th before returning home on Tuesday, October 21st to host Moravian. The Gophers will celebrate Senior Day against Elizabethtown on October 25th for a 3:30 kickoff.
