SALISBURY, Md. – Goucher College lost three of the final four singles matches to be edged by Virginia Wesleyan 5-4 in non-conference men's tennis action on Saturday.
Anthony Wilson defeated Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to clinch the match with the fifth win for the Marlins.
The Gophers won at No. 2 doubles thanks to an 8-6 win by Frankie Mullinix (Washington, D.C./The George School) and Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) against Paul Gladstone and Michael Portera.
Goucher started singles with wins by Ota at No. 1 singles against Gladstone by a score of 6-1, 6-3 and Herman at No. 2 singles 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 to take a 3-2 lead in the match.
Virginia Wesleyan then won the next three matches to earn the victory. Andreas Combos defeated Slad Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion) 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Tep downed Mullinix 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Wilson beat Kane at No. 6 singles.
Adebamgbe defeated Perry at No. 5 singles 7-5, 6-3 after the deciding match concluded to set the final score at 5-4.
Goucher returns to action on Sunday at Salisbury. The Gophers will play Bridgewater College at 10 a.m. and Salisbury at 2 p.m.
