Swim Teams Pick Up Win Over Gallaudet, Fall to McDaniel
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Goucher College swim teams traveled to Gallaudet University after issues with the heater in the pool at the von Borries Aquatic Center. The final meet of the season before the conference championships came down to a tri-meet facing Gallaudet and McDaniel on Saturday afternoon.
The Gopher women split the afternoon, securing the win over Gallaudet 121-47, but fell to McDaniel 103-84.
The women began the meet with a first place finish from the 200 Yard Medley Relay team (2:10.66) consisting of Olivia Reichardt, Ella Robinson, Gressa New, and Molly Smith.
Goucher earned 3 of the top four finishes in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Kaitlyn Firth finished first, with a time of 2:11.41. Emily Strickland finished out the podium, placing third (2:37.90). Kan Jarvis completed the race just behind Strickland, with a time of 2:43.30.
Firth also finished just 0.20 seconds behind first place in the 100 Yard Butterfly, and a second plave finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:57.00), Strickland followed behind with a time of 7:08.13.
Jarvis placed first in the 100 Yard Backstroke (1:12.89). Smith added a third place finish in the 50 Yard Freestyle (28.70) and also in the 100 Yard Butterfly, finishing in 1:21.17. Reichardt and New rounded out second and third in the 100 Yard Freestyle, finishing in 1:04.15 and 1:09.40.
Robinson finished first in the 200 Yard IM, completing the race over 10 seconds faster than her competitors (2:28.14). She also added a first palce finish in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, completing the race in 1:14.61.
The Gopher women rounded out the meet with a second place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay (1:58.92). The team consisted of Emma Kistner, Jarvis, Strickland, and Reichardt.
The Goucher men also split the meet, coming out on top over Galluadet 107-51, but falling to McDaniel 127-60.
The men also began strong, with a second place finish in the 200 Yard Relay Medley consisting of Ben Graff, James Piland, Joshua Contreras, and Aiden Grimm. They fell just over a second behind the first place finishers with a time of 1:50.72.
Olivia Barnes earned a third place finish in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, with a time of 14:51.47.
The men earned two of the three podium finishes in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Contreras earned second with a time of 2:03.10, while Francisco Garcia Ibanez placed third (2:14.24).
Piland added a first place finish for the men in the 50 Yard Freestyle, finishing in 24.53. Grimm finished just 0.30 seconds behind, rounding out third. Contreras added another first place finish fo the Gophers, in the 200 Yard Butterfly, completing the race in 55:42, over 25 seconds faster than his competitors.
Two Gopher finished in the top three in the 100 Yard Backstroke, Graff finished second clocking a time of 1:02.20, while Grimm finished behind in 1:03.48. Piland added another second place finish in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, falling just over a second behind fist place (1:10.72).
Garcia Ibanez (59.34), Barnes (1:02.96), and Christian Houck (1:02.97) finished second, third, and fourth in the 100 Yard Freestyle.
The men finished with a second plave finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:51.04. The team cosisted of 1:51.04.
The Gophers compete next in the first day of Landmark Championships, on February 13th at the Mangione Pool in Loyola, Md.
