BRANCHBURG, N.J. – Lauren O'Leary (Potomac, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and the Gouher College women's golf team sit in third place after the first round of the Landmark Conference Women's Golf Championships on Saturday.
O'Leary, who finished 12th last year at the league championships, sits in a three-way tie for third place and 13 strokes behind last year's second-place finisher, who is the current leader. The sophomore posted three pars (9,13, 18), 11 bogeys, three double bogeys and one triple bogey to register a 47 on the first nine holes and a 45 on the back nine.
The Gophers are in the exact same position it finished last season with a third-place standing as a team with a score of 388 and one stroke out behind Catholic University of America (387) for second place and 22 strokes behind Drew University (366). Susquehanna University (402), the University of Scranton (405), Marywood University (421), Juniata College (462) and Elizabethtown College (533) rounded out the eight-team field.
Christina Pevey (Post, Texas/Post), who finished third at the 2018 championships, is three strokes behind O'Leary in ninth place. The sophomore posted a 95 in the first round after carding four pars (7, 8, 13, 17), seven bogeys, five double bogeys and two triple bogeys. She had a 48 on the front nine holes and a 47 on the final nine holes.
Emmie Starchvick (Jacksonville, Ore./South Medford), who placed fifth last season in the postseason tournament, also sits in the Top-10 and one stroke behind Pevey with a round of 96. Starchvick recorded four pars (2,9, 14, 15), six bogeys, five double bogeys and two triple bogeys to card a 52 on the first nine holes and a 44 on the back nine.
Danielle Pena (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery) (21st place, 105) counted toward the team's score while Emily Pochet (Royersford, Pa./Pennsylvania Leadership Charter) (27th place, 111) rounded out the Gophers' five competitors at the league championships.
Goucher will be paired with Drew University, Catholic University and Susquehanna University for the final round on Sunday. Pochet will be the first player to hit the links at 11:50 a.m. and will be followed by Pena (12:00 p.m.), Starchvick (12:10 p.m.), Pevey (12:20 p.m.) and O'Leary (12:30 p.m.) will be in the final group pairings.
