West Earns Pair of Goals in Season Opener
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (0-1 overall) hosted the Green Terror of McDaniel College (1-1 overall) on Wednesday evening for the 2026 season opener. A strong offensive performance from the Green Terror propelled them to a 17-4 victory.
McDaniel College began by scoring two goals within the first minute of the competition. Over the next five minutes, the Green Terror poured on the offense, adding four more goals to take the lead 6-0 with 9:19 remaining in the first quarter. The Gophers offense remained strong, but a foul gave McDaniel the man-up opportunity, which they capitalized on (5:12). Over the next four minutes, the play remained neutral, and a green card gave Goucher the man-up. Less than a minute later, the Green Terror found the back of the net again, taking the 8-0 lead heading into the second.
The second quarter opened with an early save for junior, Kennedy Harper, but McDaniel maintained possession off a turnover. Following a foul, the Green Terror capitalized on a free-position attempt to build the lead to nine. Less than two minutes later, they added their tenth of the contest. The scoring run by the Green Terror was halted by a goal from Camden West, earning her first of the season (8:08). The remainder of the first half became a defensive battle, holding the score to 10-1.
In the first three minutes of the second half, McDaniel added to their lead, with two goals to bring the score to 12-1. The next eight minutes remained neutral; however, it was highlighted by a shot from Wrenn Harney and a caused turnover from Angelena Holmes. West broke the scoring stalemate with a free position goal for her second of the contest. The Green Terror attempted to rally following the goal, but were stopped by Harper, who added three key saves.
The Gophers opened the fourth on offense, adding a shot from Tatiana Emeruwa seconds in, and they maintained possession. Off the restart, Emma Nelson added the first of her career at Goucher, off a pass from West. McDaniel responded with a pair of goals over the next three-and-a-half minutes to bring the score to 14-3 with just over 11 minutes remaining. Over the course of three minutes, McDaniel added two more to bring their lead to 13. Following a green card for the Green Terror, Katie Bloom added her first of the season off a feed from West. McDaniel added their final score of the game with seconds left, to bring the final to 17-4.
Nelson led the Gophers with three shots in the contest, while Harney added three ground balls. DJ Howell, Holmes, and Emeruwa each caused a turnover. While Harper recorded a full 60 minutes in net, adding 12 saves.
The Gophers are back in action Saturday, Feb. 28th, against Cedar Crest. The opening draw is set for 2pm.
