Harper Earns 100th Career Save Against Drew
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (3-7 overall, 0-3 conference) hosted the Rangers of Drew University (7-3 overall, 2-1 conference) on Saturday afternoon. Despite the close opening quarter, the Rangers' offense used a dominant second and third quarter to win 20-6.
The Rangers started the game strong, scoring their first goal less than a minute in. The Gophers countered after a successful clear attempt with a goal from Katie Bloom, assisted by Wrenn Harney (12:50). Just over a minute later, Kennedy Harper snagged her first save of the game off a shot from Drew. Despite the save, the Rangers were able to sneak one past her to give them an early 2-1 lead (10:35). The Gophers won the ball back from a Ranger turnover, for Amaya Locke to tie the game at two apiece. After a won draw control, the Gophers stormed down the field where Camden West found K. Bloom to put the Goucher ahead (9:06). The Rangers retaliated, scoring two free position goals in two minutes (5:34). The Rangers continued to pour on the offense, adding three goals in three minutes, with two of the goals being a man-up. Drew led 7-3 heading into the quarter.
Drew carried their offensive momentum into the second quarter, scoring back-to-back man-up goals in the first minute. After seven minutes of game play, Harper racked up another save, leading to a ground ball scooped up by Angelena Holmes. With five minutes left in the half, the Rangers scored their tenth goal of the game. Drew closed out the quarter scoring a man-down goal, giving them an 11-3 lead heading into halftime.
The Rangers opened the second half with two quick goals in the first two minutes. Drew followed the opening goals with four more, including one off a free position attempt. The teams traded possession over the next five minutes before the Gophers ended the quarter with Locke's second goal of the game off a pass from Tatiana Emeruwa. The Rangers held a 17-4 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The Gophers started the quarter strong with a goal from West in the first 40 seconds. The Rangers answered three minutes later with their first of the quarter. After five minutes of game play, Drew capitalized on a man-up opportunity. The Rangers' final goal of the game came from a free position attempt (3:51), to give Drew 20. In the last minute of the game, Emma Nelson found the back of the net off a free position attempt to bring the Gophers to six.
Three Gophers recorded two points to lead the team. K. Bloom and Locke saw the back of the net twice, and West followed with a goal and an assist. On the defensive end, Gaby Cruz Santiago added four ground balls, and K. Bloom led the team with two caused turnovers.
Harper spent 60 minutes in goal, adding 11 saves and allowing 20 goals on 31 shots. With the 11 saves today, Harper recorded her 100th career save.
The Gophers return to action at home on Wednesday, April 1st for a 7pm contest against Wilkes University.
