Gophers Earn First Conference Win Following Weather Delay
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (4-7 overall, 1-3 conference) hosted the Colonels of Wilkes University (8-4 overall, 0-4 conference) on Wednesday night. After a weather delay, they earned their first conference win of the season, winning 16-7.
The game began after an hour and 40-minute weather delay. Tatiana Emeruwa put the Gophers first on the board after a good clear attempt (11:42), but the Colonels countered, scoring two minutes later. Amaya Locke capitalized on a free position attempt, scoring her first of the game at the 8:24 mark. The Gophers continued to pour on the offense with two goals coming in the next minute from Wrenn Harney and Emeruwa. With 4:20 left in the quarter, Kennedy Harper snagged her first save off a Wilkes free position attempt. However, the Colonels added another goal to bring them within two with just under four minutes to play. Camden West added the final goal of the quarter with 2:32 on the clock, bringing the score to 5-2..
The Colonels opened the second quarter by scoring 30 seconds in. The Gophers retaliated with back-to-back goals a minute apart, from Emeruwa and Katie Bloom. Bloom found the back of the net two minutes later off a pass from West, giving the Gophers an 8-3 lead. Three minutes later, first-year Dayana Flores Bermudez added another goal to the board for the Gophers. After four minutes of gameplay, Emma Nelson scored a man-down goal, assisted by Harney. Goucher ended the half with back-to-back goals from West and Locke, to carry a 13-3 lead heading into the half
Goucher opened the scoring of the third quarter with a man-up goal from Imani Ward at the 11:02 mark. After six minutes of gameplay, the Colonels found the back of the net to bring them within ten. Wilkes added another goal just over a minute later (3:00). The Gophers closed the quarter with a goal from Dakhai Handy (1:30) to restore the ten-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Wilkes scored the first goal in the final quarter off a free position shot (12:41). Just over a minute later, Emeruwa added her fourth goal of the night (11:06). Following this goal, Huda Chaudhry entered the contest in net for Goucher. The Colonels answered with a goal at the 9:25 mark. Due to weather conditions in the area, the game concluded with 8:21 left in the fourth quarter with the Gophers earning the victory, 16-7.
Emeruwa led the Gophers with four goals on the night. Following her was West, and Bloom, who added three points on the night, each with two goals and one assist. On the defensive end, Gaby Cruz Santiago led the Gophers with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Angelena Holmes led with three ground balls in the contest. Harper added 49:15 in the net, while recording six saves off 12 shots. First-year, Chaudhry spent 2:24 in goal and allowed one goal.
The Gophers return to action on Saturday, April, 4th against Bryn Mawr at 12pm. The team returns home on Wednesday, April 8th to host Lycoming at 7pm.
