Bergman, Maxwell Emerge as Singles Flight Champions

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher produced the champions in two singles flights today at the Goucher Open.
Junior Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) won three matches on the way to reigning supreme in Flight III of the singles competition. She disposed of Tara Varga from Richard Stockton 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and Leslie Durante from Penn St. Behrend 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) in the semifinals to reach the finals where she knocked off Chelsea Donde from Gwynedd-Mercy 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9).
A 6-3, 6-1 victory over Megan Noschese from Penn St. Behrend in the quarterfinals and a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Nicole Rodriguez from Richard Stockton in the semifinals landed sophomore Addie Maxwell (Southwest Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) in the Flight IV finals. Maxwell earned the title by downing Heather Morgan from Gwynedd-Mercy 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5).
The Gophers had two players competing in Flight I: senior Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) placed fourth overall and senior Jacqui Lamer (Pomona, N.Y./Ramapo) was seventh. In Flight II, sophomore Meaghan Lee (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) finished in fourth place and senior Andrea Stephaich (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Ellis School) in sixth.
Stephaich and Lamer represented Goucher in Flight I of the doubles competition and ended up in fourth place. In Flight II, sophomore Alyssa Zick (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) and junior Emma Sicalowski (Essex, Vt./Essex) placed sixth.
