Gophers Drop Road Match at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton opened Landmark Conference women's volleyball play with a 3-0 win over Goucher College Friday evening at the John Long Center. Set scores were 25-8, 25-22, 25-9.
- The set was tied three times early, with Goucher (0-14, 0-3 Landmark) taking advantage of a Royal (9-9, 1-0) service error to tie the set 3-3.
- Scranton reeled off six straight points before a Maria Basantes kill stopped the run.
- The Royals led 20-6 before the Gophers had a Dakota Hawkins kill and another point on a Royal attack error.
- Trailing 4-2, Goucher scored six straight points to take an 8-4 lead.
- Scranton scored the next three points before a Basantes kill.
- Down 15-14, four straight points capped by a Lucille Hendricks kill put the guests back in front.
- The Royals countered with a 7-1 spurt to go up 22-19.
- After Goucher scored three straight points to tie the set 22-22, Scranton scored the final three points to take the match.
- Scranton led 7-2 early and gradually pulled away to build a 15-5 lead.
- The Royals closed the set and the match on a 7-2 run.
- Athena Savick paced Goucher with nine digs, while Madi Kraemer had eight and Liv DeBiasio seven.
- Scranton hit .302 for the match while holding the Gophers to .000 hitting.
- Goucher travels to Drew on Saturday and faces the host Rangers to open a noon tri-match in Landmark Conference play. The Gophers then take on Marywood at 2 pm.
- The Gophers are back home Friday, October 25 against Susquehanna for a 7 pm match at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
