Goucher Swept by Moravian in Three-Sets
BALTIMORE, MD.- The Goucher Gophers (6-10, 0-1 Landmark) hosted Moravian University (8-7, 0-1) for their second Landmark Conference game of the season. Despite a strong effort, the Gophers were swept 3-0 by the Greyhounds.
Goucher got on the board early with a kill from Liv DeBiasio. After a quick exchange of points, the Greyhounds built a 5-3 lead before AaShyah De Vries responded with a powerful hit, assisted by Alex Jordan. The Gophers regained momentum with a Moravian error and a service ace from Lucille Hendricks. De Vries delivered a solo block to stop a Moravian attack, but the Greyhounds surged ahead with a four-point run. Goucher answered with back-to-back kills from Kelsi Hockaday and Maria Basantes, followed by a service ace from Jordan to close the gap. Kills from Hockaday and Hendricks helped Goucher stay close, and attacks from De Vries, Basantes, and Hendricks narrowed the deficit late. However, Moravian sealed the first set with a service ace, 25-20.
Moravian struck first in the second set, but Dzhygit quickly tied it at 2-2 with a kill. The Greyhounds responded with a five-point run, broken up by two consecutive kills from Hockaday. After another Moravian surge extended their lead, Goucher clawed back with successful attacks from De Vries, Hendricks, and Dzhygit. Although Dzhygit added two more kills in a late rally, Moravian maintained control and pulled away to win the set 25-14.
Goucher came out aggressive in the final set with early kills from DeBiasio and Hockaday. Moravian built a 6-3 lead before Goucher capitalized on an error to regain possession. The Gophers stayed in striking distance with a kill from Dzhygit and another from Hockaday.DeBiasio added another kill, and Imani Ward joined Dzhygit in scoring two more points late in the set. Despite the effort, Moravian closed out the match with a 25-15 win.
