Gopher 3-0 Victory in Last Home Contest

BALTIMORE, MD.- Goucher Gophers (9-16, 1-6 Landmark) hosted the Wolves of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania (2-5, 0-0) in a non-conference match-up for their final home game of the season. The Gophers won in three straight sets, leading to their 10th win in a season since 2019.
Goucher begins with a lot of momentum, taking an early 9-1 lead with kills from Kanay Parham, Liv DeBiasio, and Alex Dzhygit. Lucille Hendricks has an early service ace added to the Gopher scoreboard. Dzhygit keeps swinging with two more consecutive kills. Cheyney responds by capitalizing on Goucher errors to gain a few points and narrow the gap. As the set progresses, Goucher maintains control to keep their lead. Sofia Ortiz sets Kelsi Hockaday up for a kill before a successful setter attack for herself. Wolves serve an ace before kills from Hendricks and Dzhygit, taking the score 19-9. Parham puts two more kills on the scoreboard, nearing the end of the set. Cheyney puts up a late fight for a few points before Goucher takes the set 25-13.
Hockaday starts the set with a kill assisted by Ortiz. Gophers go on a spike run with three kills from Hockaday, Hendricks, and AaShyah De Vries. Cheyney shortens the deficit, falling behind by two points, 9-7. Athena Savick serves two consecutive aces followed by a kill from Maria Basantes 14-7. Goucher continues serving aces with two more from Ortiz. The Wolves begin to fight back, making up a few points, 12-17. Basantes and Hendricks score again for Goucher before Cheyney goes on a five-point scoring run. Alex Jordan closes out the set with two service aces, taking the set 25-18.
Going into the third set, Goucher scores first with a kill from Hockaday. Quickly, Cheyney picks up speed, taking a 4-1 lead. A kill from Basantes breaks the Wolves' scoring run. Gophers come back, tying the set 6-6. Kills from DeBiasio and De Vries help push the Gopher lead. Goucher keeps swinging with spikes from Hendricks and Basantes, extending the lead 18-10. Jordan completes a setter attack before a final kill from DeBiasio wins the set 25-17.
Basantes was the Gopher leader in kills with six, tied with Hendricks. Dzhygit followed closely behind with five. Ortiz was the leader in assists with 21 and the leader in service aces with four. Parham was the Gopher leader in solo blocks.
Goucher returns to action on October 31st at Susquehanna. The game will begin at 7 pm.
