Three Gophers in Double Figures Against Colonels
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (4-11 overall, 1-7 conference) fell to the Colonels of Wilkes University (9-6 overall, 4-4 conference) on Saturday afternoon 70-56, despite the late offensive push in the second.
The Gophers established their offensive presence early with three made back-to-back threes, giving them an early 9-8 lead seven minutes into the game. Both teams exchanged baskets, but the Gophers had the advantage, taking a 23-21 lead after a Jadyss Fifer dunk and multiple made threes. The Colonels tied the game up at 23 with two minutes left in the first half. For the remainder of the first half, both teams continued to trade baskets, but the Colonels held the slight advantage over the Gophers (27-26) heading into halftime.
Wilkes came strong out of halftime, knocking down back-to-back baskets, while Brian Griffin added the first basket of the second half for the Gophers. The Colonels went on a 14-7 scoring run to give them the 10-point lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. The Gophers fought back with a made dunk from Chima Egeonu and made threes by Fifer to come back within six. Both teams continued to make buckets, but the Colonels' late threes gave them the win in the contest.
Darnell Morris Jr. led the Gophers with 14 points, shooting 6-14 from the floor. He was followed closely by Kong and Fifer, who scored 11 points each. Kong went 3-8 from the field and led the team with six rebounds and two assists. Fifer shot 4-7 from the field and went 50% from beyond the arc.
Wilkes led the Gophers from the floor and from the 3-point arc. The Colonels shot 48.1% from the floor and 41.2% from beyond the arc, while the Gophers went 36.8% from the field and 30% from three. Goucher led Wilkes from the charity stripe. The Gophers went 5-6, whereas the Colonels went 11-15.
The Gophers are on the road as they travel to Susquehanna on Wednesday, January 21st for a 7pm tip-off. The Gophers return to the Decker Sports and Recreation Center on Saturday, January 24th when they host Scranton. Goucher will also be hosting their Alumni Game prior to tip-off.
