TOWSON, Md. - Junior Zephan Harnish (Woodsboro, Md.) scored a career-best five goals on the night, pacing the Goucher men's lacrosse team to a convincing 14-6 victory over visiting Wesley on Wednesday evening at cold and windy Beldon Field.
With the win, Goucher evened their record on the year to 4-4, while Wesley dropped to 1-5 overall with the defeat.
In the victory, the Gophers raced out to a 10-3 lead at the end of the first half, and never looked back, as Goucher posted their best output of the season on the offensive end with their 14-goal performance, while outshooting Wesley by a decisive 46-22 advantage. The Gophers won 15-of-22 faceoffs on the evening, and went 16-of-21 in clear attempts, as well.
Harnish led the way on the night, scoring a goal in the first quarter, two in the second, one in the third and his fifth in the fourth. Harnish, who also had two assists on the evening, posted five ground balls in the contest, as well, matching a team-high in that category.
Elsewhere, sophomore Andrew Sade (Lewisberry, Pa.) had his second straight hat trick in the win, scoring three goals with an assist. The junior tandem of Mason Gorman (Boise, Idaho) and Grant Lasorda (Collegeville, Pa.) scored two goals, apiece, as Gorman posted three assists, with Lasorda recording one assist.
Meanwhile, senior Pierce Bailey (Miami, Fla.) scored a goal, had two assists and five ground balls, and fellow senior Derek Bitzer (Doylestown, Pa.) rounded out the goal scorers on the night for Goucher with a score and three ground balls.
In net for Goucher, senior Matt Messerle (Limerick, Pa.) earned the win, making seven saves, with three ground balls.
The Goucher College men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Neumann for their final non-conference contest before Landmark Conference play begins next weekend. Face-off is set for 1 p.m.
