Road Win Highlighted by Career Milestones for Two Gophers
DOYLESTOWN, PA - The Goucher College men's lacrosse team (2-5 overall) traveled to face the Aggies of Delaware Valley University (0-5 overall). A dominant performance by the Gophers led them to the 21-6 victory, highlighted by two career milestones.
The Aggies won the opening faceoff, but Nick Gambone quickly earned the ball back for the Gophers off a caused turnover, which led to the early goal for Gianni Karam. This goal marked the 100th career point for Karam with the Gophers. Goucher poured on the offense from there. Milan Temple scored the next three goals over three minutes, with one being fed from Jack Murdaugh. Karam added his second of the game from Scott Tayman to give the Gophers a 5-0 lead with 7:24 left in the first. The final two goals of the quarter came in the final minutes, with Jacob Morgan finding the net off a pass from Temple. Karam finished a hat-trick in the last second to give Goucher the 7-0 lead heading into the second.
The first minutes of the second were scoreless until Delaware Valley broke through and added its first of the contest with 11:32 on the clock. Morgan responded two minutes later, following the won faceoff from Aaron Butera. After a three-minute scoreless stretch, Kevin Gearhart added the next goal for the Gophers, and Murdaugh responded to the faceoff to put Goucher up 10-1. Tayman and Eli Jean-Jacques scored back-to-back goals to continue to build the lead for Goucher. The final goal of the first half came from Temple off a feed from Morgan to put Goucher up 13-1.
Delaware Valley opened the third with a goal, attempting to cut back the deficit, but Goucher responded with two goals 40 seconds apart from James Dean and Tayman. The game fell scoreless for 11 minutes, which saw 12 shots combined, before Morgan capped the quarter with a goal with 5 seconds left. Goucher led 16-2 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
The Aggies opened the quarter with a goal once again (14:24). Karam and Morgan teamed up three minutes later to find the back of the net once again. Morgan and Murdaugh continued to build the lead with back-to-back goals. With this goal, Morgan earned his 250th career point. Morgan added his final goal of the competition with 8:14 left in the game. Jean-Jacques finished a pass from Murdaugh for Goucher's final goal with just under seven minutes left to play. The Aggies rallied with three late goals but were unable to overcome the substantial lead Goucher built.
Morgan led the team with seven points on the night from five goals and two assists, with Temple following behind with five points from four goals and one assist. Butera led the team with eight ground balls, while Ginigeme Anyaoha and Tallinn Loberg each contributed to the team's total of 38. Jack Schiavone led the defense with four caused turnovers.
Josh Steinmiller contributed 60 minutes in net, earning 10 saves off the 16 shots faced. The Gophers faceoff team had their best performance of the season, with Butera going 12-15, Mason Wolf going 6-10, Sean Phillips going 1-4, and finally Schiavone adding an attempt.
The Gophers led in every statistical category; doubling the shots from Delaware Valley with 52 compared to the Aggies 26. The Gophers also added more groundballs (38-29), and went 19-30 from the faceoff.
The Gophers are back in action on Wednesday, March 18th at Pitt-Bradford for a 5pm faceoff, before the return home to face Scranton on Saturday, March 21st, at noon.
