Goucher Drops First Game of Tri-Match

BALTIMORE, MD.- Goucher falls to Washington College in the first game of the tri-match hosted in the Decker Sports and Recreation Center. After three competitive sets, the Shorewomen come out on top.
A few errors by the Gophers allow Washington to take an early lead in the first set. Lucille Hendricks responds with a kill to put Goucher on the board. Washington maintains its lead until Maria Basantes ruffles the Shorewomen's momentum with a kill, putting the Gophers only five points behind. Both teams keep the score tight until a block from AaShyah De Vries, followed by a spike from Alex Dzhygit, keeps Washington only two points in front with the score 15-13. A five-point scoring run cements Washington's lead, which will be maintained, allowing them to win the set 25-15.
Maya Miller starts the second set with a service ace, followed by a kill from Kelsi Hockaday, putting Goucher on the board. Washington takes the lead back quickly, and Dzhygit responds with a spike assisted by Athena Savick to tie the Shorewomen. After a six-point run, Washington takes the lead 13-6. Savick tries to take back the momentum for Goucher with a service ace. Alex Jordan, Hendricks, and Hockaday fight back against the Washington lead with spikes but come up short, losing the set 25-16.
Washington goes into the third set taking an early 5-2 lead. A few errors by the Shorewomen allow Goucher to almost tie the score at 6-5. Liv DeBiasio sets up Imani Ward for a kill that helps keep the score close for the Gophers. After a six-point scoring run, Goucher ties the set 19-19. After a close back-and-forth near the end of the set, DeBiasio tries to keep the Gophers alive with a kill. Washington ends up winning the set 26-24.
Hendricks led the Gophers in kills with six. Savick led the team in digs with 10, followed by Jordan with six. Hockaday, De Vries, and DeBiasio tied in solo blocks with one each. Jordan led in assists with nine.
Goucher will host its next home contest on Wednesday, September 10, at 7 pm.
