Gophers Take Down Wilson in First Game of Tri-Match

BALTIMORE, MD - Goucher starts their day with a win against Wilson College Phoenixes. The Gophers earn a 3-1 victory, taking control by winning the first two sets decisively, 25-10 and 25-20. Wilson rallies in the third set, narrowly edging out Goucher 25-23 after a late surge of points. Ultimately, the Gophers regroup in the fourth set, sealing the match 25-18.
Wilson scores first off an error from the Gophers. Goucher bounces back with a six-point scoring run. A service ace from Athena Savick and a kill by Juliana Stoneberg propel the Gophers' lead. Wilson adds to their tally with two kills, bringing the score closer to 7-10. Goucher hits their stride with two service aces from Sofia Ortiz, followed by two spikes from Alex Dzhygit, Stoneberg, and Imani Ward. Leading to a nine-point scoring run, 19-7. Wilson adds two more points to their tally, but Goucher maintains their strong lead. First years AaShyah De Vries and Kelsi Hockaday close out the set with two spikes, leading to Goucher taking the set 25-10.
Lucille Hendricks starts the scoring for Goucher off a set from Ortiz. Wilson puts themselves on the board before the Gophers, before a kill from Dzhygit and a service ace from Alex Jordan lead to the Gophers taking control of the set 7-1. A service ace from Wilson leads to the Phoenixs, adding to their tally. The Gophers make an out-of-system play with Jordan getting a kill off a set from Liv DeBiasio. Gophers extend their lead with back-to-back kills from Ward 12-5. Both teams go back and forth with Wilson gaining traction against the Gopher lead. Hendricks' spike takes back the Gopher control, making the score 17-11.
Wilson fights back with successful attacks, shortening the Gophers' lead to 20-16. A few errors by Wilson add to the Gophers' lead. Stoneberg has a successful attack to close out the set 25-20.
Gophers take an early lead with a four-point run to start. Kills by Hockaday and Stoneberg help the Gophers take the score 4-0. An attacking error by Goucher gives Wilson the ball. Both teams score back and forth, tying the game 7-7. Two consecutive successful attacks by Hendricks and Stoneberg give Goucher the lead back. A spike by the Phenoixs gives them control and leads to four more points on their scoreboard, 18-11. Multiple errors occur on both teams, taking the score to 21-17 in Wilson's favor. Goucher fights back, trying to take back the lead with three consecutive kills from Hockaday, Dzhygit, and Ward, putting the Gophers only one point behind. Ortiz makes a last effort with a kill, followed by an attacking error by Goucher, leading Wilson to take the set 25-23.
Wilson has a competitive start to the set, 3-0. Hendricks helps the Gophers take the lead with a kill followed by a service ace. The Gophers keep swinging with spikes from DeBiasio, Ward, and Hendricks, taking the Gopher lead 11-8. A Gopher setting error leads to Wilson getting two more points on the board, putting Goucher only two points ahead. Goucher picks up momentum with two kills from Dzhygit and DeBiasio, 21-15. Goucher ends the set with two spikes from Hendricks and a service error from Wilson to win the set 25-18.
Hendricks led the Gophers in kills with 13, followed by Dzhygit with eight. Jordan and Ortiz led the team in service aces with three. De Vries had three of the four solo blocks during the contest. DeBiasio led the Gophers in digs with 20 of the 89 total. Ortiz was close in digs with 16. Jordan and Ortiz lead in assists with 13 and 10 of the 35.
The Gophers will return to action on September 17th at Arcadia. The contest will begin at 7 pm.
