Cedar Crest Overtakes The Gophers

COLLEGEVILLE, PA.- Goucher was on the road today to compete in a tri-match. Their first match-up was against the Falcons of Cedar Crest College. After a tough-fought game, the Gophers fell in three sets.
AaShyah De Vries has a big kill for Goucher to take the lead early. Quickly, Cedar Crest fights back with a four-point run. Gophers take back control from the Falcons after Cedar Crest's attacking error, leading to two consecutive kills from Kelsi Hockaday and Liv DeBiasio. Cedar Crest takes control early with a score of 12-6. Hockaday and Lucille Hendricks have successful spikes. Imani Ward fights back at the end of the set, scoring for the Gophers. The Falcons maintain control through the set, winning the set 25-13.
Cedar Crest takes an early 12-1 lead. The Gophers gain traction with kills from Ward, DeBiasio, and a service ace from Athena Savick. Ward goes on a roll with two consecutive kills, taking the score 7-15. DeBiasio has two successful service aces, clawing at the Falcons' lead. Cedar Crest adds to their lead, taking the score 19-11. Hockaday spikes a point for Goucher, then completes an assist for Alex Jordan. Hendricks and DeBiasio have kills late into the set, keeping the Gophers in the fight. The Falcons end up taking the set 25-19.
Gophers start the set strong with a kill from DeBiasio and capitalize on the Falson error. After Cedar Crest's service error, Goucher takes control with two kills from Hockaday and two service aces from Savick, giving the Gophers a 9-4 lead. A competitive back-and-forth ends in Cedar Crest taking the lead 13-11. De Vries, DeBiasio, and Ward slam kills for Goucher, fighting for the lead back 16-14. The Falcons end up with the lead and fend off the Gophers through the rest of the set. Despite late efforts from Hockaday and DeBiasio, Cedar Crest fought back to secure the match victory.
DeBiasio was the team leader in kills with 9 of the Gophers' 27. Ortiz was the leader in assists with 13, followed by Jordan with eight. Savick led in digs with 18, followed by Ortiz with 10.
The Gophers will return to action on Wednesday, September 24th, at 7 pm. They will travel to Gallaudet University.
