Gophers Lose in Confrence Showdown

HUNTINGDON, PA.- The Gophers (6-12, 0-3 Landmark) travel to battle the Juniata College Eagles (15-2, 3-0 Landmark) in this conference showdown.
Alex Dzhygit scored the first point for Goucher off a set from Sofia Ortiz, and Goucher briefly gained a few points from Eagle errors. However, Juniata responded, taking a 4-3 lead. Seizing control of the ball, Goucher allowed Dzhygit another spike, followed by a service ace by Alex Jordan. The Eagles, though, strung together a seven-point scoring run to push their lead to 11-6. Lucille Hendricks added a kill to the Gopher tally. Despite a few additional points for Goucher from Eagle errors, Juniata maintained its advantage, closing out the set 25-10.
Set two begins with a strong Eagle start. Dzhygit and Maria Basantes have successful kills for Goucher. Juniata maintains control through the set, taking the second set 25-4.
Gophers have a competitive start to the third set, going on a five-point run to start. Hendricks and Dzhygit begin swinging with successful kills for Goucher. After Juniata gained ball control, Goucher quickly regained it, earning two service aces from Hendricks 9-1. Gophers keep up the service aces with one from Athena Savick, pushing the Gopher lead 11-3. Juniata fights back with a five-point run, landing two points behind Goucher 11-9. The Gophers gain a few more points from Juniata errors before a big block from AaShyah De Vries and Kelsi Hockaday. Both teams go back and forth before the Eagles cement their win, taking the third set 25-18.
Dshygit was the lead in kills with six, and Ortiz led the Gophers in assists. Hendricks led in service aces with two, followed by Ortiz, Jordan, and Savick. Savick, Ortiz, and Hendricks tied in digs.
The Gophers return to action on October 11th when they travel to Lycoming. The game will begin at 12:00 pm.
