Cyclones Storm Past the Gophers

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J.- Goucher went on the road today to compete in a tri-match. The Gophers' (9-16, 1-6 Landmark) second matchup was against the Cyclones of Centenary University (14-11, 2-1 Atlantic East). The Cyclones overtook the Gophers in three straight sets.
Gophers begin swinging early with two kills from Lucille Hendricks. Kanay Parham has a big block followed by a service ace from Sofia Ortiz. Centenary pushes back against the Gophers' early momentum, coming only one point behind 5-6. Henricks and Alex Dzhygit respond to the Cyclones with kills assisted by Ortiz. Gophers gain points off Cyclone errors, leading to a 10-10 tie set. Centenary pushes ahead before a spike from AaShyah De Vries, assisted by Alex Jordan. The Cyclones pick up speed, leading 22-14. Goucher gets two more kills from Hendricks and Kelsi Hockaday before losing the set 25-19.
Going into the second set, Goucher comes out strong with a service ace by Liv DeBiasio, followed by a kill from Hockaday. Centenary pulls ahead early with a 9-3 lead before a kill from Dzhygit. Gophers stay aggressive with successful swings from DeBiasio and De Vries. Cyclones propel their lead 17-10, but De Vries keeps swinging with two more kills added to the Gopher tally. Goucher gains a few more points with swings from Parham and Hendricks, but it is not enough, and the Gophers drop the set 25-17.
The Cyclones give the Gophers early points off errors in the third set before a spike from Hendricks adds to the scoreboard. Centenary takes the early 8-6 lead before kills from Dzhygit and DeBiasio chip at that lead. Gophers inch ahead with kills from Dzhygit and Hockaday, pushing Goucher ahead 13-12. Cyclones do not give up the lead easily, tying the set 16-16. Gophers gain points with spikes from Hendricks and DeBiasio before Centenary goes on a five-point run, cementing their lead, taking the final set 24-20.
Hendricks was the Gopher leader in kills with seven, followed by De Vries with five. Ortiz led in assists with nine, with Jordan right behind with seven. Athena Savick led in digs with 15 for the Gophers, and Parham led the team in solo blocks.
Goucher will return to action at home on Wednesday, October 29. The non-conference game will be against Cheyney at 7 pm.
