Goucher Overtakes the Eagles

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J.- Goucher was traveling today to compete at a tri-match hosted by Centenary University. The first match-up was against the Eagles of St. Elizabeth University. The Gophers had a tight game but came out victorious 3-2. During today's game, Alex Dzhygit and Athena Savick had career highs. Dzhygit had a career high in kills in a game with 16, surpassing her previous 11. Savick had a dig high of 26, passing her former 24.
Goucher takes an aggressive start with kills from Lucille Hendricks, AaShyah De Vries, and a service ace from Lucy Ingraham. The Eagles quickly tie the set 4-4 before the Gophers fight back with a successful swing from Hendricks and a service ace from Sofia Ortiz. Dshygit gets her first kill of the day, taking the Gopher lead 8-6. After some back and forth, St. Elizabeth takes control of the set 14-9. Goucher gains points of kills from Liv DeBiasio and Dzhygit. The Eagles begin to put a bigger distance between themselves and the Gophers. De Vries and DeBiasio swing for Goucher, gaining points. Eagles keep their momentum throughout the latter half of the set. Kanay Parham and DeBiasio try and build momentum with kills. Savick has a service ace late in the set, but it is not enough, and the Eagles take the first set 25-19.
The Eagles have an early start, 4-0. Dzhygit puts two kills up for the Gophers. St. Elizabeth keeps their lead 9-5 before Dzhygit and DeBiasio have back-to-back kills. The Gophers gain a few points on the Eagle errors, but St. Elizabeth pulls ahead 17-12. Goucher hits their stride with a six-point run. Goucher has successful spikes from Parham, DeBiasio, and a service ace from Hendricks, helping the Gophers tie the set 18-18. Near the end of the set, Alex Jordan assists Kelsi Hockaday and Hendricks, taking the set 25-21.
Heading into the third set, Goucher gains a kill from DeBiasio and a service ace from Jordan. The set ties early 4-4 before a kill from Hockaday pushes the Gophers ahead 5-4. Eagles go on a four-point run, pushing ahead 8-5. The Gophers pick up momentum. De Vries clinches a service ace, followed by kills from DeBiasio, Ortiz, and Dzhygit 12-9. DeBiasio adds two more kills to the scoreboard. Gophers push ahead 18-16. Jordan and Dzhygit have successful swings, and Ortiz hits a service ace. A service ace from Hendricks and a final kill from Dzhygit lead to the Gophers taking the set 27-25.
The fourth set starts with a kill from Dzhygit and a service ace from Hendricks. A kill from DeBiasio takes the Gophers to 4-2. Both teams are evenly matched, taking the set 6-6. Gophers go on a six-point scoring run with kills from Hendricks, De Vries, and a service ace from DeBiasio, 13-6. Dzhygit keeps swinging, having two more successful spikes, pushing the Gophers ahead 19-16. Eagles gain on the Gophers, starting to push ahead. Later kills in the set from Hockaday and De Vries try and fight back, but the Eagles ultimately take the set 25-20.
The game is pushed to a fifth set to determine the winner. Gophers take an early 6-1 lead with two kills from Hendricks and errors from the Eagles. St. Elizabeth inches on the Gopher lead, ending up two points behind 5-7. Gophers work out of system with Savick assisting Ortiz in a kill. Goucher extends their lead 13-7. Two more kills from Hendricks seal the deal with the Gophers taking the set 5-10.
Dzhygit was the leader in kills, followed closely by DeBiasio with 13. Ortiz led in assists with 20, and Jordan followed with 14. Hendricks had the lead with service aces at four. Savick was the Gopher leader in digs with 26, and Hendricks had 19.
The Gophers will play next at home. They will be hosting Cheyney at 7 pm in a non-conference match-up.
