Gophers Stumble Against River Hawks

SELINSGROVE, PA.- The Gophers (10-17, 1-7 Landmark) head into their conference contest against the River Hawks of Susquehanna (10-18, 5-3 Landmark). Even though the Gophers falter against the River Hawks, Lucille Hendricks has a career-high day with 15 kills and 23 digs.
Susquehanna scores first to kick off the first set. River Hawks for on a four-point scoring streak before Liv DeBiasio strikes with a kill assisted by Sofia Ortiz. Gophers pick up speed with kills from Hendricks and Alex Dzhygit, tying the set 5-5. DeBiasio keeps swinging for Goucher with two more kills. The Gophers keep Susquehanna at bay with a service ace from Lucy Ingraham, and both teams go back-and-forth, leading to a 14-14 tie. The River Hawks begin to push ahead. The Gophers work out of system with libero Athena Savick setting up Hendricks. Susquehanna begins to add to its total of Gopher errors and kills. Dzhygit, DeBasio, and Hendricks fight back for Goucher. The end of the set gets tight with the teams tying 25-25, leading to a 26-26 tie. Hendricks makes another late effort to put the Gophers ahead, but Susquehanna takes the set 30-28.
Going into the second set River Hawks take the first four sets. DeBasio serves a service ace followed by a kill from Hendricks, putting the Gopehrs on the board. Dzhygit and Hendricks help the Gophers shorten the deficit. The Gophers pick up momentum with AaShyah De Vries helping the Gophers add to their spike count, tying the set 8-8. Gophers gain a few points on Susquehanna errors, but the River Hawks push ahead 15-10. DeBiasio scores, and Kanay Parham has a successful kill assisted by Ortiz. Susquehanna keeps its lead throughout, taking the set 25-16.
The third set starts with an early kill from Dzhygit, followed quickly by DeBiasio. River Hawks take an early 6-2 lead before going on a five-point run. Hendricks spikes for Goucher before she adds a service ace to the tally. Susquehanna maintains its lead 17-9. Gophers gain momentum with an eight-point run. Kills from Hendricks and De Vries tie the set 18-18 with a comeback. Susquehanna responds to the Gophers' comeback to take back the momentum, winning the set 25-21.
Hendricks was the leading scorer with 15 kills, followed by DeBiasio with eight. Ortiz led in assists with 20, and Parham led in solo blocks. Hendricks had 23 digs, followed closely by Savick with 19.
The Gophers will be competing in a tri-match hosted by Elizabethtown on November 2nd. Their first game will begin at noon.
